Classrooms of Tomorrow: The Huonville 8-in-1 Education Infrastructure Project

The 8-in-1 Two-Storey Double Classroom Project at Huonville Primary School is a landmark education infrastructure development undertaken by the Lae City Authority, under the leadership of Lae MP and Deputy Prime Minister Hon. John Rosso. Located along 7th Street in Lae City, the project was initiated to address increasing student enrolment and overcrowded classrooms in one of Papua New Guinea’s fastest-growing urban centres.

To deliver a solution that was both durable and scalable, the project was designed, fabricated, and constructed by Atlas Steel PNG, using its innovative pre-engineered steel building system. The final structure comprises eight modern classrooms across two levels, built with reinforced concrete foundations, weather-resistant steel cladding and roofing, and high-quality internal finishes—offering a safe, modern, and future-ready learning environment.

This project directly supports the National Government’s Free Education Policy, which has significantly increased enrolment numbers across the country. By expanding Huonville Primary School’s capacity, it ensures more students can access quality education without straining existing facilities.

Beyond increasing space, the building greatly improves the overall learning environment. Its modern design enhances student focus and teacher effectiveness, while the two-storey layout optimally uses limited urban space. Safety, comfort, and functionality were central to the design and delivery.

The Huonville classroom project also exemplifies the strength of public-private partnerships. The collaboration between Lae City Authority and Atlas Steel PNG highlights how shared vision and cooperation between government and industry can deliver real, community-driven impact.

This project stands as a long-term investment in education and community development—a symbol of progress, partnership, and the transformative power of education in Papua New Guinea.

Project: TVET Umi Vocational School Project

Empowering Education Through Steel: The UMI TVET Transformation

In collaboration with the European Union, this project delivered the design, fabrication, and construction of state-of-the-art vocational training facilities in the Markham District of Papua New Guinea’s Morobe Province. Spanning from 2018 to 2020, the initiative was driven by the goal of strengthening technical education through modern, durable, and adaptable infrastructure tailored to local needs.

Designed with sustainability and future scalability in mind, the facilities were built using ATLAS STEEL’s modular steel systems—a choice that provided exceptional resistance to tropical weather conditions, ease of installation, and minimal maintenance requirements. These high-performance materials not only reduced construction time and labor costs but also ensured long-term operational efficiency, allowing educational institutions to allocate more resources toward student programs and support.

The project was developed through close engagement with local stakeholders, ensuring cultural relevance and fostering community ownership. The result is a resilient, future-ready learning environment that supports skills development, educational growth, and long-term community empowerment. The flexible steel-concept design also allows for future expansion as demand for vocational education continues to rise.

This initiative stands as a testament to the transformative impact of sustainable infrastructure and strategic collaboration in advancing education and opportunity across Papua New Guinea.

    Project: OK Tedi Mining Cages

Atlas Steel PNG: Reinforcement Prefabrication & Supply for OK Tedi

Atlas Steel PNG was proud to support OK Tedi with the supply and processing of over 7,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel, ranging from 12mm to 36mm in diameter, for a major infrastructure development.

All reinforcing bar was scheduled, cut, bent, and pre-assembled into cages at our dedicated workshop facility. These prefabricated units were then transported directly to site, significantly improving project logistics and installation efficiency.

By shifting high-risk steel assembly activities off-site, this approach eliminated the need for dangerous on-site bending and tying, contributing to a safer work environment. Impressively, the project recorded zero lost time injuries, a testament to the effectiveness of our off-site fabrication strategy.

In addition to safety, the prefabrication process delivered major time and cost efficiencies-saving OK Tedi over 20,000 man-hours of on-site work. This streamlined delivery model reduced construction risk, improved scheduling, and supported OK Tedi’s commitment to operational excellence.
